What is action learning?
There are many learning theories. Action Learning has a long history in the practical application of business learning. Reg Revans is the person associated with pushing it on to the world stage - and programmes at GEC in the early 1970's triggered a significant positive response. It is now widely accepted as a powerful way of adding value in organisations and developing individuals. Since then this has been developed in many directions and is considered to be a very effective learning process.
Action Learning is essentially a process of learning from doing. It involves:
- doing something (on a real work-based project or task)
- followed by reflection with other people - collaborative learning if you like
- followed by plans for new actions.
The cyclical process of doing, reflecting and re-planning results in valuable learning, because it is constantly being tested in the real situation. 'Learning by doing' is recognised as the core of all successful approaches to development.
